ainsi font, font, font les petites marionettes...

so today elodie and her friends went to see a great rendition of the nutcracker performed by marionettes! it was sweet to see all the little children held rapt by the sugar plum fairies, lollipops playing guitars, sparkly elephants and, of course, the nutcracker and his nemesis the mouse king. the bob baker marionette theater is the longest running puppet theater in the united states and we feel pretty special to be so close to this historical monument.  i'm in love with the little puppets and set design, so creative and colorful. after the show they have a little ice cream party and you can meet the legend bob baker himself. a great rainy day activity!

apologies for the crap photos, i was too dazzled by the children and the puppets to focus on the camera.

her birthday party!

having christmas and a child's birthday in the same 2 weeks is a bit crazy making for a virgo like me but thankfully elodie's party went swimmingly. i'm so pleased that she has such great buddies (who in turn have fantastic parents!), the smilebooth was super fun and the kids played there faces off.  for party favors, i made a playlist of her favorite songs and goccoed the cd sleeves with 'elodie is 2'. everything turned out super cute and i actually got to relax and play with her which is, after all, the point. you only turn 2 once!

i have to say, i was really opposed to having her bash at a play space (toys everywhere, bad colors, chaos) but having them cordoned off into one convenient location made it possible for the parents to actually sit for a moment and take a breath. if you are in the los angeles area, i highly recommend peekaboo playland and the coop.

elodie's outfit: vintage
headband by bando (of course)!

thank you (falettinme be mice elf agin)

this december has been full from beginning to end and every night, no matter how tired, i just want to stay up one minute longer to soak it in. i am thankful for all of the wonderful new friends i have made this year, for all my lifelong friends who shore me up and of course my sweet family. my one on-going resolution is to be present when i am with them and really listen (for those of you who know me, this is a challenge!).

and on that note, i have been told repeated times about dallas clayton's new book, an awesome book of thanks. one of elodie's little friends was sweet enough to get it for her birthday and we can't stop reading it. this is hands down the best book of the year.

and to that i say THANK YOU!

merry christmas

'it's that time of year
when the world falls in love
every song you hear
seems to say
merry christmas
may your new year dreams come true
and this song of mine
in three quarter time
wishes you and yours
the same thing too'

my favorite day of the year. the world is peaceful out and hopefully you are all tucked away with people you love (preferably in your christmas jammies).

christmas eve is the best!

we invited some friends over, made a big pot of soup and wrapped presents by the fire. time to watch one of our favorite christmas movies and then dream of sugar plums...

the most wonderful time of the year

mister rogers says it best: 'i like to compare the holiday season with the way a child listens to a favorite story. the pleasure is in the familiar way the story begins, the anticipation of familiar turns it takes, the familiar moments of suspense, and the familiar climax and ending.'

there is something in the ritual of the songs, the stories, the trees, colors, smells and the new jammies on christmas eve that has always been special for me. it reminds me of sweet moments with my parents and sisters and brothers and is a path that i'm paving for my daughter. familiarity, connection, tradition.

this IS the first year that i've broke with tradition (new for me!) - we were traveling so much the first two weeks of december that we got a fake tree - a white one at that (michael has always wanted one!) i quite like it!

look at this amazing bed!

so michael and i were just talking about how well elodie has been sleeping lately. but it's s-l-o-w-l-y dawning on me that she is getting really good at scaling furniture and i know it's a matter of time before she climbs out of the crib. (crossing fingers that she lands on her bum) i'm not sure that she is ready for the big girl bed just yet but happened upon this today and started thinking, hmmm, this bed could be worth the sleepless nights. we're gonna hit that rough patch again no doubt so might as well do it in style!

and what a great idea for a toddler table...

happy birthday sweet girl. my, how much you've grown!

i am overjoyed just thinking about being with you and your papa tucked away on that rainy afternoon 2 years ago. when you came to us, you introduced me to a happiness that i didn't know was possible. i thank you every day for choosing us to be your family. and for being patient with me while i stumble along. you are my biggest treasure and i am blessed to watch you grow.

a little birdie told me...

so i got an email from jamie just as i was leaving for mexico announcing her awesome new project, cactus & quail. i love holiday traditions and one big one for me has always been making and collecting special ornaments for the christmas tree. she opened shop just in time for this rad little birdie to make it onto our tree. i haven't followed many blogs but have always loved hers. AND she's gonna have a little one in the spring! congratulations all around mama!!

party like yer two years old!

now that i am back from mexico (for two seconds before we leave for atlanta on friday) it's time to start planning elodie's second birthday party! i have to admit, i don't really like 'themes' for the little babe. but it will be a big shin-dig as we are inviting all of her little friends and schoolmates to peek-a-boo playland. next time i have a baby, i'll definitely plan for a month where we can have a big outdoor park party but december is hard!

we are going to have the smilebooth there (naturally) and one of ashley's lovely backdrops! i'm thinking about getting some cute old school animal masks like in stella's lookbook, what do you think, too creepy? i kinda like! or maybe some cute holiday cutout masks? i'm not super crafty but i am sure wielding a pair of scissors won't keeeel me!

not too late to get it there on time!

ha! i hate that saying from my days in retail. on the other hand, i LOVE these vintage christmas cards. the colors! the type! so sweet...
