ain't no party like a party!

a couple of weeks ago, i stopped by the photo shoot of's new line. sure these ladies make amazing headbands, shoe clips and hair accessories - but more than that, they are purveyors of F-U-N, sparkles and sunshine! it is truly inspiring to see the creative force of jen and jamie at work.

they also made a photo booth and dressed myself and some super fun friends up in the latest goodies. i am in awe of the their talent. and their ostrich poufs.

our good friend brian came the closest possible to capturing the magic in this behind the scenes video...enjoy!

the pioneer spirit

good news for me! we just booked a couple of nights with some dear friends at the itHouse out in joshua tree. this comes on the tail end of listening to a intriguing piece on npr on living 'off the grid.' i am fascinated by the idea of helping build and plan our own house while reducing our footprint. i'm a social creature so don't know if i could live anywhere too remote, but maybe on the weekends? probably more realistic...can't wait to share photos!

adorable? look no further...

and i'm not just saying this because elodie is in the photo. our friend max wanger, who took our family photos a year ago, has a new(ish) addition to his already brilliant online shop. he has come out with a line of his photos on kids tees and onesies. genius!

but that is only the beginning, he also has postcards (recognize the giraffe?)...

and prints guaranteed to brighten your day. we could all use that, right?

the king of love

when elodie was 3 months old we went to atlanta. it was monumental in that it was the first flashdance wedding (which is worth checking out!) and while they were busy doing their thing, elodie and i walked to the martin luther king memorial. it was an incredibly rich look into the life of this great man and i was beyond moved. i am glad we have this day to reflect on this man who is such a huge part of our nation's history. anytime you are looking for a source of hope and inspiration, look no further than his many beautiful speeches. or to this tribute to him by nina simone.

'we are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality; tied in a single garment of destiny...strangely enough, i can never be what i ought to be until you are what you ought to be. you can never be what you ought to be until i am what i ought to be.' - mlk jr.

25 months - let's dress up!

elodie has a couple of friends who are a mere 2 months older than her that are obsessed with dressing up. whenever we have playdates they giggle and run to the closet and proceed to pile the dresses on.  my mama friend said, 'oh yeah, just you wait, it's like a fever that hits them.' well, i must report, that the bug did indeed hit our house this week and elodie could be seen at any given time with no fewer than 9 articles of clothes on her body. scarves, necklaces, hats, tutus, dresses, socks, boots look out! let the fun begin!

p.s. happy 25 months elodie. you put some amazing sentences together and love to tell me what to do (mama do this, mama read this, mama sing it). you sing jingle bells, B-I-N-G-O, do-re-mi (you say 'do reindeer song') and the lonely goat herd. count to 20 in french. love to push your stroller and baby around and spend loads of time playing with your puzzles, drawing and reading books. i love you!

we took a trip to zihuatanejo, mexico right before christmas - a few of the highlights were releasing baby turtles into the ocean at sunset, elodie's first boat ride to a deserted island, naps by the ocean and pool, table tennis while elodie played in the sand, fish tacos and ceviche and lots of time together!! the airlines lost elodie's bag but thankfully there is nothing cuter than a toddler in a onesie (it was 85ยบ out)!

pennies from heaven...

happy 1-11-11! here is a little video sharkpig put together for us. the song
is perfect and stops me in my tracks every time i want to complain about something!
and doesn't our dog raleigh make a smashing baritone?

every time it rains it rains,
pennies from heaven
don't you know each cloud contains,
pennies from heaven
you'll find your fortune falling,
all over town
be sure your umbrella is upside down,
trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers
if you want the things you love,
you must have showers.
so when you hear it thunder,
don't run under a tree,
there'll be pennies from heaven for you and me...

start off your week off right

michael has posted this before but, wow, i can't stop listening to it today. this live version is beautifully shot. it looks like spring in amsterdam from the diffused almost chilly air. if you like willie nelson, check out his album of willie nelson covers. genius! oh, and for those of you who have been to the mermaid parade in coney island, you will have a chuckle from how glamorous he makes it sound!

work it

it is sooo hard to commit to working out. and i have even less time to read those fitness magazines that say, 'take the stairs' or 'do crunches at your desk' or whatever. but i am obviously aware of how good i feel when i work out. and it doesn't take me a zillion hours to shake off my sleep. so instead of joining a gym, i'm pulling out some tried and true dvds. here are two that i adore.

the first is shiva rea's yoga shakti. this dvd has 4 practices and also a yoga matrix which allows you to add sequences according to the frame of mind you are in or the areas you need to open. if you've been sitting at a computer all day, you can focus on lunges and hip openings. if you are feeling sluggish, there is a more energizing sequence. if you need to relax and settle into the evening, the lunar flow is for you. if you've been sleeping with your baby or breastfeeding, there are shoulder openers. something for everyone, beginning or advanced. i have pulled this dvd out for years and always feel my mood improve after even 20 minutes on the mat.

the second dvd, tracy anderson's method mat workout is great for resistance training and works muscles you never thought you had. i feel like a total idiot when i'm doing it so aim for nap time or when michael isn't around but definitely feel great afterwards. i also hear her post-pregnancy dvd is great but this is the one i bought when i was 3 months post-partum and it kicked my behind for sure. you might not love it, but you will see results! also, i bought her dance cardio workout and i seriously was not coordinated enough to do it even once. oh well.

use your whole heart, it's good for you

i listened to a beautiful talk on vulnerability today. i think i have become a lot sappier since having elodie, or maybe i was always this way, maybe a bit tougher? i'm not sure. but something in the way i want her to feel as she grows, helps me relate more to the person i am still crafting. and when i say crafting, i don't mean an online persona, i mean the person my family, friends and strangers interact with daily.

the main premise of the talk is that if we live whole-heartedly, aka be vulnerable, we will experience more joy, creativity and, ultimately, more connections with others. this takes a lot of courage but i know that in all aspects of my life practicing this principle has allowed me to learn so much. so it looks like i do have a resolution after all. why couldn't i just pick being more tidy? (michael would have preferred that i'm sure...)

go bananas!

i made the magnolia bakery banana pudding for our new year's eve get together and i can't stop thinking about it. i knew there were going to be lots of kiddos and thought it would be much more accessible than the crazy chocolate number or rum balls i was dreaming of. if you are ever wanting an easy dessert to whip up, this is it! i'll save the step by step beautifully styled food photos for those who have the patience for it. the recipe below is delicious!

magnolia's famous banana pudding

1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups ice cold water
1 (3.5 oz) package of instant vanilla pudding
3 cups heavy whipped cream
1 box (12 oz) 'nilla wafers
4 cups sliced ripe bananas

in a small bowl, on medium speed of an electric mixer, beat together the sweetened condensed milk and water until well combined, about 1 minute. add the pudding and beat well, about 2 minutes more.

cover and refrigerate for 3-4 hours before continuing.

in a large bowl on medium speed of an electric mixer, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form. gently fold the pudding mixture into the whipped cream until well blended and no streaks of pudding remain.

to assemble the dessert, select a large, wide bowl (preferably glass to show off all the yummy bananas and cookies) with a 4-5 quart capacity. arrange 1/3 of the wafers to cover the bottom of the bowl, overlapping if necessary, then 1/3 of the bananas and 1/3 of the pudding. repeat the layering twice more, garnishing with wafers or wafer crumbs (get creative) on the top layer of the pudding. cover tightly with plastic wrap and allow to chill in the refrigerator for 4 hours (or up to 8 hours) before serving.

twenty eleven, i am about to love you

i really, really had an amazing december and am still lapping up the last remnants of the holidays. i also have a massive head cold (yuck!), a toddler at home (fun but distracting) and a crawling slow internet connection (at&t is not the best) so i have officially moved my new year's start date to this thursday, january 6th.

so excited for all that is in store. happy (almost) new year!
