time travelin'

michael always makes fun of me because i have the memory of an elephant and often say 'this time last year we were...', well, since this is my space to record what i choose, i'm going to time travel a bit.

oscar weekend reminded me of our first family road trip out to palm springs when elodie was a mere 8 weeks old. our friends were sweet enough to have us stay at the ace hotel during the soft opening and be the 'family' in their travel + leisure spread. it was a beautiful time to go - the hotel was almost deserted (unheard of nowadays!) and i remember taking walks in the moonlight trying to soothe this brand new being. the oscars were on the night we arrived and i felt so out of touch with the outside world. as anyone with a new baby can attest, those first few weeks are so dreamy. last night we went to an oscar party at my friend amanda's house - so fun to see elodie pal around with her friend malena. how quickly they change! for instance, this is her on that trip at 8 weeks...

and exactly a year later in 2010, just learning to walk...

and now, a beautiful, vibrant 2 year old...

it's true, i love walking down memory lane!!

'this town, bye-bye'

aaaaand i'm back! las vegas was short and sweet. airplanes and blazers was a wild success. we ate well, danced our toes off and my face hurt from grinning so much in the smilebooth (as usual). the drive home was breath taking. the beautiful desert shadows, joshua trees and crazy moon landscapes act as a palate cleanser after the sensory assault that is las vegas and i returned home somehow refreshed. bye glitter gulch! see you next year.

oh, and this was our soundtrack home. gorgeous and haunting...and also, this song. always a hit!

las vegas here we come!

i am not a fan of las vegas. no way, no how. but i will make an exception for the awesome airplanes & blazers next monday, february 21st. with the flashdance, smilebooth, 100 layer cake, rue magazine, confetti system and the impossible project (to name a few) all in one room, how can i refuse? the theme of the party is old las vegas glam but i've decided i'm going for old las vegas goofy!! hope to see some of you at the party or the pancake breakfast afterwards...

next time you're in paris...

geez, if anyone were looking at my posts lately it would appear as if i were a bona fide francophile. i really, really want to visit the amazing concept store merci in paris. from what i gather, it has several sections; a cafe, parfumerie, used bookstore, craft area and a children's section. from the pictures it looks very cozy and serene. i wouldn't mind stopping by for some chocolate and espresso on a rainy day. pas du tout!

afternoon delights

this weekend with you was a dream. french class at the alliance fran├žaise, a long walk in the hills, finding a cute little wooden giraffe pull toy and other curious things (such as the lamb at top) at the rose bowl flea market, family dinner at oinkster and making sweet valentines for our friends.

this month has been all about imaginary play, you like to cover us with blankets and tell us to go to sleep, your sentences are fuller, more directive. you are running circles around us and we love watching you grow. you love taking a book to bed with you and it ends up entertaining you in the morning. i love every little thing about you. happy 26 months elodie!

your favorite things this month:
play silks
this tea set
puzzles
this big book

your favorite songs:
skip to my lou
jingle bells (still)
lonely goatherd (from sound of music)

images: any photographers out there, excuse my pictures, i do my best with a big bag of diapers and a crap lens!

love note

our first valentine's day we went to see a lakers game. our fourth we were at the soho house in nyc and you wore an 'i heart nyc' shirt with the nyc crossed out and 'liz' over it in blue masking tape. life is never ordinary with you. and now we have been together for 10 years and i want you on every adventure. i love staying up late at night in bed and talking to you until we fall asleep. you make me laugh. often. thank you for this life we share. our baby girl. our disagreements. our togetherness. the comfort and support you offer me. thank you.

p.s. our friend joanna at a cup of jo, so graciously asked us to be a part of a series she did when she first married. i just rediscovered these gems (in time for valentine's day!) i love all of the advice from the other couples, especially...

elly's word of wisdom to never stop learning!

grace's advice to talk it out, go on adventures and support each other's dreams (michael is supporting mine now!)

and last but not least, anna's mantra of, 'love your other how they need to be loved, not how you need to be.' sometimes hard, but good to remember.

happy valentine's day everybody!

je vais, tu vas, il va, nous allons, vous allez, ils vont...

i lived in the south of france for several months in my early twenties. i didn't take high school french and quite honestly didn't have an affinity for the culture or language. i just wanted to live abroad and the spain program was fully booked. so off i went to what i thought would be a little cow town, aix-en-provence, which many of you know is anything but. i took several semesters of latin and, while i was really quick at grammar, i couldn't speak a word of french. nothing will humble you faster than trying to communicate with someone and have them look at you with a blank, haughty stare. luckily this just made me want to understand more and i pored over my books and befriended those who were committed to only speaking french (the germans and swedes naturally). by the end of my 10th month i flung aside the books and hung about in the cafes with my french boyfriend. needless to say, about 18 months in i had that a-ha moment when i was at a dinner party and all of a sudden i lost track of whether we were conversing in english or french. such a great feeling. i also genuinely grew to love the people and the culture in the south, it's home away from home for this california girl.

this weekend elodie will take her first french class with me at the alliance fran├žaise in pasadena. i really want her to learn spanish (or italian would be perfetto!) but mine is so rusty that i think at this point it is a pipe dream. so french it is. beautiful and complex. although i won't be able to protect her from that humbling, i am a stupid american feeling, at least she will have more tools at her disposal when she goes to live abroad. if anyone has any tips on language acquisition for toddlers, i'm all ears!

hooked on hitched

sooooo the main reason we were in the desert was for hitched! bash please's amazing wedding showcase at the ace hotel in palm springs. so many people contributed to this event it would be impossible to name them all. from the groom's lounge styled by rue magazine to the honeymoon danceoff, it was eye candy all night! the highlights for me? the aqualillies synchronized swimming, the smilebooth with friends and of course dancing the night away with the flashdance!! didn't make it? click here to see a video of the festivities. if i were looking to get hitched (been there, done that) i would snap that kelly harris and paige appel up - lickety split!

happy place

i would like to move to this utopic little rug and start a commune. we could make biscuits with honey butter every morning and grow arugula. who's down?

you are a miracle

a friend of mine, jennifer cohen, who i took yoga teacher training with in new york introduced me to this quote.

'the child must know that he is a miracle, that since the beginning of the world there hasn't been, and until the end of the world there will not be, another child like him.' - pablo casals

we recently had the opportunity to go out to joshua tree together (and to palm springs - i'll post about that soon!) being in the quiet of the desert was such a treat. elodie had our undivided attention, no phones or distractions. i can feel her energy shift when she gets this time with us. sometimes we have to step out of the flow of daily life to reconnect and remember what a special little person we have been given to watch over.

internal dialogue

ugh, i'm so late sending out elodie's thank you cards from her birthday in december. i know all of the parents already think i'm awful. i have the cards and everything. what is my problem? maybe subconsciously i think my cards aren't good enough? well these sure are! i wonder how many pin pricks to write 'thank you'. my fingers hurt already...

snowboarding big sister adventure!

tomorrow we are heading to park city! it will be elodie's first trip to the snow and she also gets to hang with her five (count 'em) cousins while michael and i have a valentine's day date on the slopes. perfection! as i was sitting down to write this quick post i started thinking about how really lucky i am to also be visiting my big sister andrea.

i read this recently, 'to the outside world we all grow old. but not to brothers and sisters. we know each other as we always were. we know each other's hearts. we share private family jokes. we remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. we live outside the touch of time.'

this is so true and i hate how far-flung they are from me. so i'm setting the intention to see so much of my sisters this year that they grow sick of me! which probably won't be too hard, i can be quite annoying.
