gone with the wind

my lovely and oh so talented friends from bash, please had a 'studio-warming' party a couple of weeks ago replete with delicious food from heirloom LA, a wine tasting and all the fixings to make our own terrarium. thankfully i visited kristina's blog or i would have completely forgot to post a picture of mine (even though i gaze into my terrarium several times a day.) it is so rare that i get to get out of the house, hang out with wonderful ladies AND get to make something as cool as a terrarium #winning. check out all the details on how to have your own terrarium party here on design*sponge!

my terrarium is called, 'life might be hard down south but it sure is beautiful'. and yes, you are correct, that is a lady milking a dog. and a giant squirrel.

my new beach buddy

these days my fashion decisions are made based on imaginary conversations elodie has with her friends in 20 years 'and i remember when my mom used to carry an elephant straw basket around. like, all the time. so weird.' (hopefully she won't actually talk like that.) you have to admit, he is quite cute.

back to the future

i am sure this has been around the internets and back a billion times (it is that fantastic) but is new to me. irina werning recreated a ton of old photos for a project titled 'back to the future.' i am searching for the perfect photo to try and recreate of me and my siblings!

i see color bars

every year i do a cleanse of some kind on the equinox and i had mine all set to go, except, i just wasn't feeling like it. a super moon, equinox and tons and tons of rain = lots of espresso and chive gruyere biscuits.  i can list all of the things that have caused me to feel scattered over the past few weeks but, yawn, i'll skip it. suffice to say, i feel like a 5 year old trying to sit still in church. i just haven't been carving out the time to reflect on the days as they pass.

it's no surprise our western calendar that marks the new year doesn't sync up with nature. right now is a time of rebirth and renewal. the world is coming alive from a long winter's sleep and it's time to turn over a new leaf! so while i might start my cleanse in the coming week (or not) i am definitely trying to plug back into my consciousness. i've pulled out a book that always re-orients me called the heart of yoga by t.k.v desikachar. the author is the son of the famous yogi, sri t. krishnamacharya and the book is the distillation of his father's philosophy on yoga. it's an easy read and really helps me look critically at my actions. so sad that i have more time to read about yoga then to actually do it! i guess that is also my choice isn't it? sigh.

in the neighborhood

i love finding treasures in unexpected places. when an old stucco building down the street from my house in echo park was suddenly painted pink, had lavender bushes planted and a sweet striped awning, i knew there must be something going on inside those walls. i had to wait patiently to meet french general because they are only open on mondays and saturdays but it was well worth it. i entered into a world of beautiful french linens, beads, ribbons, textiles and vintage french ephemera that was probably found in the tiniest march├ęs aux puces in france. anthropologie definitely comes here for inspiration.

the owner is kaari meng and i would be embarrassed to try to convey her accomplishments. she has her own product line, designs textiles, has written many, many books and is an all around amazing woman. i showed her a little piece of art that i want to recreate and she literally gave me a play by play of how i would go about doing it. i will admit i don't know half of what they are up to at French General, i'm just not that crafty, but am planning on taking a workshop there soon to make some pretty jewelry.

oh, one thing i almost didn't mention (because they have a limited supply and i want to buy every last one), they have a fantastic line of orange blossom, lavender and milk thistle candles. visit them online or make your way there on a monday if you are in the area. it's worth the trek...and in the meantime, LA is lucky to have her.

big girl

elodie is in love with these new little letters that spell her name. i found sarah's blog, the smiling heart, through a friend of mine and was immediately touched by their desire to expand their family through adoption. learn more about sponsoring their puzzle project, the proceeds go towards the adoption of their sweet baby boy, or buy an alphabet!

you are 27 months now. we say you are a big girl and you respond, 'no, i'm a little baby' and do a little baby cry. you love to ride your bike, play in the sand and climb so well now.

some things you are starting to say which blows my mind:

when you see a traffic light you say 'green means go! yellow means s-l-o-w d-o-w-n, red means STOP!'

i picked up a book to read to you this morning and you said 'once upon a time there was a...' (whoa!)

you picked up something the other day and said 'oh my gosh. it's amazing!'

a lot of times when you do something or have something you say 'what's elodie have? what's elodie doing?'

your favorite songs right now:
do-re-mi (still)
wheels on the bus
twinkle little star
trot old joe
bare necessities

visitors

we've had the most wonderful kind of house guests this past week visiting from seattle. the friends you don't see nearly enough of, wish you could live next door to and that make you just a little bit heartbroken upon parting. i wouldn't trade that feeling for the world.

we also went to disneyland with them. if you must go, i do think we did it in a good way with a toddler. i'll post more about that this week!

puzzled

elodie has really been into 'playing puzzles' lately. this makes me happy as it is a good way to get on the ground and have some quiet play together. she has graduated from the wooden ones with the raised pegs to puzzles that have around 8 pieces. puzzles are so great for building eye-hand coordination, improving motor skills and developing shape recognition. she also loves this app which we've used as a special treat on long plane rides or when she's been out of the house too long.

here are a few we especially like:

the cutest giraffe puzzle

a narrow to wide puzzle

a vintage counting farm puzzle

it's a small world puzzle (cute!)

a dress up puzzle for when elodie's older

long haired child

i'm listening to the old devendra banhart album 'cripple crow' today. on repeat is long haired child which reminds me of my babe and growing up in southern california. makes me want to go run through the fields like a damn hippy. or at least have a picnic?

love is the message

i'm playing catch up after a beautiful weekend away but wanted to share this. while channel surfing in my hotel room (a luxury for me) i came across this short documentary from levi's on the wonderful sister corita. she was a nun, social crusader and an incredibly talented artist who created thousands of serigraphs and screenprints in the 1960s and 1970s. she was known for her positive graphic messages and the image of her screenprinting in her habit is so inspiring to me. learn more about this truly one of a kind person here.

a little nina

q: is there anything cooler than nina simone?
a: no, not possible.

this was our first dance. i can't tell you how many times i played it on the subway in the months before our wedding, imagining that moment. it still gives me chills. and then there's baltimore. who knew heartache could sound so cheery? what a fierce woman. i'm listening to her all day!

happy birthday dr. seuss

'today you are you, that is truer than true. there is no one alive who is youer than you.'

the sneeches, my many colored days and the lorax are my favorites from him!

lorax image from here.

an amazing journey

kiran had arman in november, jesse & whitney had their second baby, august jude, last month, and two of my sweet friends are expecting babies around the same time in september. one in london and one here in los angeles. i spotted this video a while ago on kristina's blog and think it's a beautiful document of the anticipation, the energy and love that is wrapped up in bringing a new little one to this world.  i can't wait to meet these perfect babies!

spring, don't be shy...

the cherry blossoms and jasmine flowers are already blooming in los angeles and it smells like a bordello. spring, i see your magic everywhere i look! i even just found a little ladybug in my refrigerator. elodie and i put her outside which i'm sure makes her an extra happy bug.

let's play in the sunshine and grow strong and healthy.

love one another

marvelous kiddo recently posted this 'manifesto of encouragement'. one of the lines that really struck me, 'right now, millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.' how beautiful to think that for all of the negative, there are also equal parts love and light being generated intentionally. we are truly blessed to have each other. to help each other. to love each other.

i have three people in mind while i write this who have been suffering lately. physically, mentally...shake that load off. i love you.
