a portrait of elegance

i just recently came across this captivating portrait of carolina herrera in her early 30s. her gaze meets the camera with such confidence, poise and strength. she's a true beauty in addition to being a fantastic fashion designer. when i googled this image i came across a lovely interview with her in tank magazine.

when she is asked what makes her happy her response is 'it makes me so happy to see all my daughters happy. my family. it makes me really happy when they don't have any problems.'

fundamental and elegant.

time travelin' memorial day

this will be your 3rd memorial day elodie. how is it possible? this year, we are home in los angeles.

last year, when you were 17 1/2 months old, we were at our family house in san diego...

and the year before that, when you were 5 1/2 months old, we were in palm springs poolside at the viceroy.

the same smile. the same spirit. i love you sugar!

i could really use a...

let's see...husband's been out of town, elodie almost knocked her two front teeth out (they still might die), stressed out because of crazy rapture dude (i'm v. superstitious) and a boat load of work. there have been some beautiful moments in between but i really just need to lay in the park with a book. or maybe stare at some clouds?

snail mail

i was so, so late to the instagram game and am now slightly obsessed (understatement) with it - such a genius way to have a visual timeline of your days and weeks. so when whitney told me about the new postagram app i was downloading it before the phone call ended. what a great idea - in less than a minute you can choose your favorite photo from your regular iPhone library or from instagram, add a personal message and then send a card to your loved ones. the extra cool thing is that the photo is perforated so you can pop it out and put it on your fridge! i have to say i would pay a little extra to be able to choose matte vs. glossy and be able to select the fonts. currently the back of the postcard has this horrid 'comic sans'-esque for the address but that's probably just the nitpicky designer in me. either way, all my relatives can expect postcards in the mail soon!

one for me, one for her

i'm a california girl so of course i'm thrilled that i get to have my little one wear sandals year round.
elodie recently had a growth spurt so we got her a new pair of red sweethearts and a pair of tan ones to match mine.

and i cannot get enough of these sandals i just found in tan - super vintage-y sweet!

since i cannot shut up about road trips ever

i thought i'd make a playlist in honor of them. sorry to anyone who finds all this road trip talk to be a bit boorish. you still might like this mix.

2 standout songs:

everybody's gotta live - love - this is fourth of july riding bikes around the lower east side in manhattan shooting bottle rockets at the buildings (yep. i did that).

tomorrow is a long time - elvis presley - summertime floating on a pennsylvania lake in the middle of a big stand of trees.

welcome mirth...

betsy, a teacher i so admire, just had a new little baby girl in march. she posted this lovely poem on her blog that i wanted to share.

we’ve all been waiting for you.
for you.
your arrival has been marked, has been recorded
on earth,
in the universe,
in the galaxies,
in all of space,
in all of time.
you come with a birthright, written in love and sung
through all creation in words which promise
that no matter where you’re at,
you’re home
that no matter who you’re with,
you’re welcome
that no matter who you are,
you’re loved.

just shy of two and a half...

this weekend while we were lying in bed you jumped across me and i heard your heartbeat in my ear. it reminded me of the first time we met. i heard your heartbeat and i knew you existed and had to draw in the lines of who YOU were with my imagination. everyday you exceed my wildest visions of what love looks like. happy 29 months elodie.

you are verbally expressing emotions more this month 'makin' me sad', 'i so happy' and you love to say, 'make me happy' which is, um, a little unnerving i must admit. 'i do it myself' is still the catch phrase around the house. what an independent little person i see emerging. oh, and you are biting and hitting me. which feels terrible and i still don't know what to do about this.

you have a new nighttime ritual which consists of us covering you with your three aden + anais blankets. and then a pillow. and then a book. and you insist on falling asleep to this album.

songs you love:
yellow submarine
it's a small world
bare necessities

books you want to read:
an old copy of lady and the tramp
miffy places to go
on the night you were born

my hank + lucy guest post

i've been 'guest posting' a bit on some pretty great blogs and just realized that i should also put them on mine (duh?) jamie and celia are both on maternity leave and asked me to share some thoughts on motherhood and such. i decided to tackle the first 6 weeks after the baby is born. it is such an important time but for some reason is so rarely discussed or thought about our culture. anyway, if you fancy such topics, stop on by!

up the road from us...

we just returned from a beautiful mother's day weekend along the central coast in california. living in los angeles, there are such great family getaways just 2-3 hours in every direction. this time we decided to head north and because it was mother's day every thing was booked with the exception of....

the madonna inn! wow, i had heard from friends about this place but seeing really is believing. there was literally one room available both nights we went so we crossed our fingers and headed out. we couldn't believe our luck when we walked in to spring flowers. elodie was over the moon to be in such a colorful room! next time i would love to stay in this room (or maybe this one!)

that night we ate at the gold rush steak house - the food was as over the top as the environment - a bit heavy for my taste but we had a fantastic time dancing with all of the old timers and eating the famous pink champagne cake.

we were going to go to the hearst castle but since we were already up to our neck in opulence we did this instead...

day 1:
- time at the madonna inn's new infinity pool drinking mock piƱa coladas
- renting bikes and riding the bob jones trail to the sea which takes you through wine country, across rivers and down to the cute little beach town of avila
- the big sky cafe in san luis obispo

day 2:
- another long bike ride to a beach playground
- lunch in paso robles at thomas hill organics (highly recommend)
- combing through antique shops and one of the best fabric stores in california
- a stop by the l'aventure and caliza wineries (highly recommend l'aventure on many levels)

i definitely want to spend more time in this area soon. on the itinerary for next trip:
- dinner at artisan in paso robles
- santa maria bbq
- dinner at los alamos' famous full of life flatbread
- maybe a farm stay at rincondada dairy
- some beach time in cambria/st. simeon and a trip to the hearst castle
- and hopefully the road to big sur will be open so we can head to one of my favorite places on earth!

thanks to my husband and little girl for a beautiful mother's day weekend.

my mother

there's only one mother. and this picture says everything. when i feel worried or upset, she still comforts me. when i am happy or have good news, she is my biggest fan. if not the mama, then who? there is a belief in some philosophies that you choose your parents, from them you learn everything, good and bad. i am so grateful i chose this wonderful woman.

for mother's day i gave her this bowl because she has taught me this phrase so well. i'm trying to live up to her example. i love you mama.

weekends are for road trips!

welllll we were heading up to big sur to celebrate mother's day as a family. i have been dreaming of our trip last september (for my birthday) - it was the first time we left elodie with grandparents and we had the most beautiful time. unfortunately hwy 1 is closed right above hearst castle which means we would have to drive an extra gazillion miles on hairpin roads to make it happen. so we are heading up to the central coast which is equally gorgeous (and closer) to spend some time in paso robles, san luis obispo and cambria. can't wait to see what we discover!

and a little recap of last year's big sur trip because i must have forgot to post it then. i'm getting a bit better at this...

highlights included:
- breakfast every morning at deetjens

- coffee from the big sur bakery

- dinner at nepenthe and post ranch inn

- hiking to waterfalls in julia pfeiffer burns state park

- spending our quiet afternoons sitting in adirondack chairs (with our feet in the big sur river) reading books newly acquired from the henry miller library

- yoga under the big redwoods outside our cabin

i'm going to do a proper post on this trip as we have so many lovely photos on a memory card somewhere. yep, sounds about right.

happy may

how is it may already? we just returned from an impromptu getaway to palm springs for some pool time and fish tacos. oh, and to listen to michael spin records at the amigo room. it's been said a million times before but i'll say it again, i love the desert. the peaceful evenings by the fire and shadows from the mountains are a nice change from the often frenetic energy of los angeles. i can breathe again.

swim time

elodie has been beelining it to the water every time we go to the ocean or a pool. i am so happy that she isn't afraid of the water and i want to keep it that way! we have taken some beginning swim classes at the rose bowl since she was five months old (doggy, kitty, doggy, kitty, zzzzzz) but it's really time to teach her how to swim. i remember chatting with a papa from vancouver last time we were out in palm springs -- his daughter was 3 and swimming circles around him. i can't remember what method he used... any suggestions?

it's official...we live in LA

my friend, a recent new york transplant, was recently telling me how she never would have dreamed of hanging out at a mall with her toddler. that is until she moved to los angeles and saw the beautiful americana at brand. they have a playground, trolley, kid's club and plenty of grassy areas to run around as well as a petting zoo and farmer's market on the weekends. what's not to love?

shortly after that conversation, i was pleasantly surprised with a call from art director cleo murnane to be a part of their 'tastemaker' campaign. basically they feature different LA residents every month (like oh, joy!) and highlight where they like to shop - they wanted a mama and baby for the may issue and we were happy to oblige!

what a blast we had - highlights for elodie included riding the trolley, carrying around a balloon 3 times her size, getting her finger nails painted and eating chips and guacamole. you couldn't ask for a more perfect shoot (no wardrobe changes - we love that!) especially since the fantastic photographer bonnie tsang shot it. such a bizarre thing to see our faces splashed all over LA's biggest magazine - thanks americana for letting us be a part of the fun!
