her third halloween

well, to be honest, we are laying a bit low this halloween. elodie has had a cough and a fever since late last night and we are going to maybe do five minutes of trick or treating. thankfully minnie mouse and pippi longstocking made it out to the self-realization halloween party on friday. my friend amanda always has the best costumes for malena - this one takes the cake! love these two together...

elodie really wanted to be minnie mouse but we didn't love the options that were out there. i am not costume sewing mama unfortunately (though total envy!) so we made up her costume with the following:
dress thrifted when i was in london
black tights, mittens and shoes from h&m
minnie ears from the disney store
she took off her black nose and whiskers immediately. she's not big on the face painting yet.

the best thing about young children is that they have the imagination to fill in the blanks. so often, we do that for them with every detail. no need!

speaking of dance parties - we are going to have a positively frightening time at the ace hotel in palm springs tonight for the flashdance halloween party. hope to meet you there!

i am never happier than right now

i am never happier than when i...
spend an extra ten minutes in bed with my family in the morning, cuddling and reading
hear a beautiful song
get lost in a project, the hours passing, and i see a creation come to life
dive into a stack of new yorkers rather than check instagram one last time
paint a picture with elodie
call my mom
sit in a dark theater with my little sister holding her hand
share a meal and a laugh with an old friend

lying in my yoga class yesterday i thought of all these things and felt close to perfect. these moments, although right there in front of me, become obscured by the barrage of every day life. just thinking about them brought a smile to my face. i don't have to wait for a new happy moment to happen. i am never happier than right now.

monkeying around

this weekend featured a pumpkin patch, birthday party, a fun craft class and lots of time with my little family. elodie received this cute monkey sweater in the mail just in time for halloween. even though the temperature reached 80+ she refused to take it off (or quit munching on it's tail.) toto knits, is a line of organic cotton knitwear handcrafted in kenya. the founder erin brennan allan has created a wonderful offering of cute, affordable blankets, hats, sweaters and more hand knit by single mothers. we are definitely going to be designing a sweater for the holidays.

when in wicker park...

i've been working the day and night away in chicago this week so haven't had too much time to explore. last night my friend mona and i went for dinner at the bedford to be followed by dessert at the dreamy violet hour. on the way, we stumbled upon a lovely little shop called asrai garden in wicker park. it is filled with the most wonderful flowers, curios and perfumes imaginable and they almost had to drag us out at closing. with lines such as côté bastide, lauren zindel and patch nyc this is the perfect little spot to get a gift or something for yourself. i'll be dreaming of this sweet little mother of pearl hand stitched by tamar mogendorff for a while!

happiness is...

a 'butterfly cocoon' preschool made out of strawbales. what a warm and inviting place for preschoolers to play. if this were in los angeles, elodie would be the first child enrolled. read more about the construction of this sweet waldorf preschool in cuernavaca, mexico on inhabitots!

what's your dosha?

tonight i was texting with a friend of mine and i mentioned how my little one had the most epic tantrum in the history of ever. i almost 100% blame it on this crazy heat wave we are having. she then wrote, 'the heat really brings it out, especially for the little pitta babies which i think both of ours are.' a light went on for me because i hadn't thought of paying attention to her dosha. sure, heat will get anyone worked up but, in eastern philosophy, their is a belief that your mind-body makeup is actually a recipe and following it can help you walk through life with more ease. i was finally able to help her relax by getting her into a tepid bath and putting erik satie's gnossiennes number one on repeat.

in ayurveda, a dosha is your specific mind-body makeup. when your system gets out of whack, either physically, mentally or enviromentally you don't feel good. knowing your dosha and the things you can do to help get your body back into balance is an amazing thing. there is a more eloquent explanation here (where you can also find out your dosha).

i have noticed when i live my life according to the recipe that is suggested to a vata (i'm also a pitta) that i am much happier and more grounded. for some reason, probably sheer laziness, it really hadn't occurred to me to also think of elodie's and make changes based on that but i'm going to try it out!

i'm always interested in hearing the things that other mamas (and non-mamas) do to chill out. i went outside and stared at the moon for a good 20 minutes. that seemed to help tonight.

the adorable tea collection

we are having some crazy weather in california and it's hard to really believe when we wake up and it's 58° that it will actually reach the forecasted 85°. this is where tea collection comes in. they have a great range of dresses, tops, leggings (and more) in a striking fall palette that perfectly transition from summer to autumn. elodie just received a few items and they are fast becoming staples.

i can't wait to pair this dress with a shirt underneath or some colorful tights when it gets a bit more chilly.

and a striped dress and colorful leggings? i wish this was my outfit!

in addition to all of the cute girl's clothing they have lots of options for boys and baby as well. i wish elodie had this romper when she was an early walker. seriously cute.

{thanks tea collection!}

exploring autumn

it's time for another round of betsy's developmental play classes for babies and toddlers. elodie and i are going to be taking the sunday 'autumn & me'  where we'll sing, craft, meet woodland creatures and get to explore autumn in all it's beauty. betsy is also hosting a music class led by sarah peters of world citizen baby. if you are in LA and interested in any of the classes, email betsy and mention the littlest for $10 off your class. hope to see you there!!

here are some pictures of last year's class where babies and toddlers dressed up and hunted for pumpkins, spiders and more in a wading pool filled with hay and cobwebs. elodie loves looking at pictures from this day!

stay hungry, stay foolish

i felt like i was punched in the gut when i heard on the radio that steve jobs died today. i don't think more than a week has gone by in the last 20 years where i haven't touched something created by apple. or pixar. he was a true visionary and genius. revisiting the 'think different' campaign with images of wonderful, thought-provoking people such as jane goodall, rosa parks, alfred hitchcock, ghandi, jim henson etc it's not hard to picture him amongst these great thinkers.

just two days ago i was at apple headquarters in cupertino to begin a project for them. i am so proud to work for this company and truly believe in steve's words, 'you can't connect the dots looking forward. you can only connect them looking backwards. so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. you have to trust in something. your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. because believing that the dots will connect down the road, will give you the confidence to follow your heart, even if it leads you off the well worn path. and that will make all the difference.' i went off the well-worn path and somehow i ended up at apple.

these words apply to every thing i do in my life, in my work and my relationships. life can be messy, confusing and scary. we don't know what lies ahead but we have to work towards a vision of what we want our lives to be like.

when i close my eyes and think of happiness, i see myself riding my bike with my family, i feel sunshine on my face, i smell the ocean air. i have a feeling of my daughter being safe and secure next to us. togetherness. i don't see the latest shoes or clutch or caftan anywhere in this picture*. so how does my vision slip away so easily? how do i get so caught up in things that are just not important? days like these are meant as a time of reflection. to pause and think of a greatness of a life and how you too can impact the lives of those around you. even in the littlest way.

thank you steve.

quotes from his 2005 commencement address - the best 14 minutes you could possibly spend on youtube.

*not to say those things aren't fun!

i've got a date with the rain

working on some new projects that i'm excited to share soon. listening to eddie kendricks and drinking my favorite new tea. happy to have a productive day!

there is no life without your love

october, you are funny

i've come to terms with the fact i take wayyy too many photos. so tonight i'm up organizing and uploading to mobile me. it's taking me on a walk down memory lane (i'm a very nostalgic person if you haven't noticed) and i found some amazing photos of octobers past. running through a corn maze with my sister and nieces in utah, elodie's first and second halloween, our baby moon in palm springs. i couldn't resist posting our halloween photos when i was 7 months pregnant with elodie. i tastelessly decided to be angelina jolie out of sheer laziness and saloon keeper michael played records in downtown la. a really fun night! obviously i was very pleased with my costume - i couldn't stop grinning.
