the kissing hand

e starts preschool this week. it's amazing to hear her talk about it and all of the things she imagines she will do there. we have driven her by more than a few times and talk excitedly of this new chapter in her life. at orientation, her new teacher recommended a book called the kissing hand by audrey penn that has quickly become a favorite.

the mama raccoon kisses the palm of her little one's hand and instructs him to put his hand to his cheek when he feels lonely and the kiss will warm him and remind him of his mother's love. it's a sweet little book that we enjoy reading. best of all, elodie has been kissing my palm and saying "elodie loves you, elodie loves you." i have a feeling that i'll be putting my hand to my cheek a lot on her first day of school.

  1. Ohhh - so cute and yes - I think your hand will well and truly be attached to your cheek! She'll glow with all that she experiences there - they love it so much - even the ones who cry as they are dropped off (I suspect they haven't read that book so use crying 101 to pull heart strings!). Bless.

  7. I adore that book. I gave it to my little sister when she started kindergarten, then again when I left home for collage. Such a simple & sweet reminder that a you are loved even when separated.

  9. hello beautiful friend! I just spent the last half hour reading your glorious blog....i didn't comment on every entry but i loved them all. You are such a lovely person inside and out—and I can't believe sweet Elodie is going to be in preschool! She will love it. It's hard initially to let them go, but honestly they learn to soar!

Here's another silly little trick we learned at Wolfie's preschool, which became a cute/popular thing for us to do. It's hard to see mama (or papa) walk away at drop off, so one of the mommy's started this cute thing that we copied. She would ask her little boy to "push" her out the door (gently). "Spencer, can you give mama a little push?" And the child would push her at the doorway and she would jump out (as if the push was so strong). And they would both giggle and laugh. And of course often the child would want to do it "again! again!" It made the actual act of leaving a "fun" thing in the eyes of the child.

Good luck as your sweet girl move into an exciting new phase of life!!! xoxox
