sometimes you just need to cancel your plans and enjoy a weekend at home. our little family definitely needed the time together. it was a perfect mix of having friends drop by and outdoor adventure. we live right by the entrance of the la river bike path and rode on up to the village bakery in los feliz before continuing on to the griffith park merry-go-round. if you ever find yourself on the east side of los angeles, rent a bike in griffith park, and go for a spin. los angeles has a bad wrap for not being very bike friendly, don't believe it!

deep blue sea
i'm with michael in turks & caicos and elodie gets to spend time with the grandparents. pretty much a win-win! it's always nerve-wracking to leave her for any amount of time but i know how excited her grandparents are and that makes me so happy. i had grand plans to post the outfits i am going to take with me but instead i'm just thinking about that big greenish blue ocean and this song.
"blue is 'the color of an emotion, the color of solitude and desire, the colour of there seen from here, the colour of where you are not. And the color of where you can never go. blue is not in the place those miles away at the horizon, but in the atmospheric distance between you and the mountains.'"- rebecca solnit, a field guide to getting lost

crafting community in palm springs
kimmel kids + splendid are throwing their annual "crafting community" at the ace hotel in palm springs (my home away from home!) i happened to be leaving the ace one year as they were setting up and vowed then and there to come back when elodie was old enough. the idea is to come out to a beautiful, quiet space, spend time by the pool, eat good food, make art and just be together. sign me up! there will be workshops by the likes of clare vivier (my personal favorite), tanya aguiñiga, and yellow owl workshop. so sad that we will be out of town that sunday. if you are anywhere near the palm springs area, do try and make it!! it will be a one of a kind experience for adults and children alike.

be playful
i've had this picture hanging in my living room ever since iris apfel starred in a campaign for coach in 2008 (i used to work as an art director for coach in new york.) her style and joie de vivre is legendary. i hope to be as cool as she is when i'm eighty! it's been around for a while but if you haven't checked out the blog advanced style it's pretty great. our friends at the ace hotel threw a party for them in new york a while back, wish i could have attended!

moments like these never last
i'm starting this week remembering how very lucky we are to be here. it's so easy to fall in the trap that it will always be this way. it won't. stay awake this week, listen, watch, and love each other.
"if we had keen vision and feeling for all ordinary human life it would be like hearing the grass grow and the squirrel's heart beat, and we should die of the roar which lies on the other side of silence." - george eliot, middle march

all light and shadows
back from bali and straight into a rainy, moody week. this is pretty much perfect for me since i have so much going on right now. we are house hunting, school searching, working, trying to catch up from our big trip and the weather is a nice way to turn inward and focus. at nights, after elodie is in bed, i've been reading my favorite photography books. two that seem perfect for this weather are hungarian photographer andré kértesz' "on reading" and "kértezs". he was one of the pioneers of photography and incorporated the most interesting use of light, shadows, and perspective. a true artist.

balinese dreams
we are back from the enchanted island of bali. i've never encountered people who are more loving towards children (the balinese children rightly believe that children are the closest to god.) and have the balinese smile imprinted on my heart forevermore. i'm still in the weeds of a brutal jet lag but can't wait to share photos and thoughts on traveling with a toddler on a long-haul flight. more soon!

an old favorite...
hailstones and halibut bones by mary o'neill is one of my favorite vintage children's books about color. pure poetry. make sure you look for the version illustrated by leonard weisgard.
