early waking

i have started a morning meditation inspired by the book "seven times the sun".  i light a candle and think of each member of my family. i think of their qualities and how lucky i am to have them in my life.

my husband. such a loving person, always working hard, always willing to help me to refine our vision of life together. i think of the things he loves and remind myself of his separate being. it's so easy to just think of him there, he's been there so long. but he is separate from me and reminding me of who he is makes me love him more.

my elodie. such a light. always wanting me to tell her stories and help her write notes to friends. she asks me daily to put her on my lap and sing 'little sack of sugar."

and francesca. francesca, i see you. sometimes you look at me as if saying, "oh there you are." sitting up, needing me in different ways. looking at your sister and papa with such pure adoration. i adore you too.

i have never been an early riser but the perspective that my little children are "my morning mentors, teaching me to celebrate the new day" has made me pause and understand that i am letting precious moments of life slip away with all my grumbling. so with that, good morning.

  1. What a beautiful post.

  2. This is gorgeous. I always struggle with the meditation part often yoga practice but I think if I adopt this approach I will find it much easier, so beautiful Elizabeth, thank you.

  3. What an incredible way to start your day -remembering and focusing on what really matters. Absolutely, positively beautiful!

  4. Such a beautiful post, and just what I needed to read this morning. My 6 month old daughter woke up at 2.30am and wouldn't go back to sleep until 5am this morning. It's so easy to feel frustrated with them when you're deliriously tired, but your post has reminded me to enjoy her and appreciate her, no matter what time of day or night. Thank you!

  8. This is what I needed to read right now, right this moment. Morning has become fraught with battles between Maia and me and it's ruining our first moments together as a family. Thank you for sharing this with us.

  10. Oh my goodness what a gorgeous post. I love it. I've gotten good at ending my days with this type of meditation, but I haven't done it in the morning. Both would be good, I think. Thanks for the inspiration.
